The Role of Standardization in Faster Constructions
-
Harold Zadeh

Standardization is one of the foundations of industrialized construction. Repeating suitable structural dimensions, connection details, service pathways, and production procedures can help teams work more consistently and reduce the number of unique details requiring coordination.
Bloxtone is being developed around repeatable module configurations that could support different building types within a common manufacturing process. Standardized elements would provide a starting point for design, while layouts, structural requirements, exterior finishes, and site conditions would be reviewed for each project.
Repeatable production can also support quality control and workforce training. Defined procedures and inspection points give teams clear requirements to follow. Lessons from prototype testing and production could be used to refine those procedures before they are applied more widely.
On site, consistent component identification, connection locations, and service interfaces could make installation easier to plan. Lifting arrangements and assembly sequences would still require project-specific review, taking account of module weights, crane access, supporting structures, and site conditions.
To support these benefits, design decisions would need to be coordinated before manufacturing. Changes made after production begins can affect molds, reinforcement, service routes, and adjoining components. Clear drawings, version control, and communication between design, factory, and installation teams would help manage those changes.
Bloxtone’s objective is to reduce unnecessary variation while retaining flexibility in building layouts and architectural design. The potential schedule benefits would depend on how well standardized components suit the project and how effectively design, production, delivery, and assembly are coordinated.
